Job Description

Profile:

The role of the Competitions Quantitative Analyst is to provide mathematical analysis and solutions to all quantifiable elements of UEFA competitions in order to support competition development objectives with scientific findings. He/she will develop and apply quantitative methods to help UEFA make competition, sporting and financial decisions, identify profitable opportunities and any potential bias in the current competitions system and make proposals for improvements in this regard. He/she will support the Strategic Development Competitions Manager in the development of the club competition (primarily UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League) and national team competition parameters and the elaboration of statistical models.

Purpose:

Competition systems and formats:

  • Optimising competition formats and identifying potential issues;
  • Analysing the impact of format changes, e.g. on sporting outcomes (using simulations) and competitive balance;
  • Calculating the probability of different sporting outcomes in different competition systems;
  • Analysing and developing further sporting parameters, such as seeding systems;
  • Analysing competition trends and defining new indicators to measure the competitions’ attractiveness.

Access lists:

  • Analysing the impact and consequences of potential new access lists and new qualification methods for European football.

Coefficients:

  • Analysing the current bias of the club and association coefficient ranking systems, examining coefficients and optimising the way they are calculated;
  • Helping to develop methods and tools to identify future trends and developments in the club and country rankings.

Draws:

  • Providing mathematical support to help prepare and organise draws;
  • Creating an automated draw simulator to anticipate issues and simulate potential outcomes;
  • Helping to develop draw systems in order to facilitate their implementation (taking into account the increasing number of constraints).

Match calendar:

  • Addressing the current number of calendar constraints and improving the implementation of the match calendar;
  • Developing systems to analyse domestic fixtures and the risk of match clashes.

Financial distribution:

  • Creating accurate financial outcome simulations based on different sporting scenarios;
  • Evaluating the impact of UEFA’s new distribution system.

Requirements:

Experience required:

  • From 4 to 6 years in quantitative analysis (in the academic, financial or insurance sectors, the sports industry or another relevant area)

Education:

  • Master's degree or PhD in an applied quantitative discipline (e.g. mathematics, econometrics, statistics or financial engineering)

Languages:

  • English / Proficient
  • French / Advanced

Additional requirements:

  • European football knowledge
  • Advanced IT skills and programming knowledge to be able to transform mathematical analyses into new IT tools and help to further develop computer-based systems in all areas of competitions
  • Experience of handling large datasets
  • Risk management expertise
  • MS Office / Advanced
