FIFA has launched the second phase of the Technical Leadership Training and Support Program in Africa. From Tuesday, April 10 to Thursday, April 12, the technical directors of eight CAF member associations from the South and East of Africa participated in the Pilot Workshop for Module 2B ( Technical ) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The main topics of the three-day course were the coaching and elite promotion in the youth field. Two years ago, the eight participants attended the first FIFA Technical Leader Workshop (Module 1) in Malawi, where a national overview of the role of National Technical Director was presented.

"This workshop is the next logical step after 2016 in Malawi," said Jürg Nepfer, FIFA Technical Development Director and workshop coordinator. "There, we focus on implementing project management strategies to tackle the large and complex work of a technical manager.

Here we have the second discussion stage and dealt with the two most important aspects of the development tasks of the technical director. Without qualified and competent working with players and teams, and without well-led elite youth development, football can not thrive. "

    The following technical leaders:

    • Neil Tovey (South Africa)
    • Rimothy Tjongarero (Namibia)
    • Salum Mamadi (Tanzania)
    • Bekisisa Mkhonta (Swaziland)
    • John Kaputa (Malawi)
    • Francis Oti-Akenteng (Ghana)
    • Ulric Mathiot (Seychelles)
    • Abdul Rassullassine Abdulla (Mozambique)

In addition to these technical directors, Dominique Niyonzima, Senior Manager of the CAF's Technical and Development Department, Fran Hilton Smith, Head of SAFA Women's Football, and Frans Mogashoa, SAFA Instructor for Training, attended the workshop.

The FIFA delegation to the event was led by Steven Maartens, FIFA Technical Director. These included Nepfer, Hansruedi Hasler (Switzerland), Willi Ruttensteiner (Austria), Matjaz Jaklic (Slovenia) and Ashford Mamelodi (Botswana). All are current or former technical managers and development representatives.

So in attendance were David Fani, Development Manager of the FIFA Regional Office in Johannesburg, and Govinden Thondoo, FIFA Technical Advisor for the region. Represented in the member associations are represented.

The workshop followed by innovative, interactive approach, where FIFA experts presented the modules in individual lessons. The attendees were given practical experience in the respective country by the present Technical Leaders in order to create a connection to examples from real life. Subsequently, the technical leaders were divided into smaller groups to deal with specific topics. The discussion results were presented to the entire group.

The topics of the first day

    • Teacher training
    • The role of the technical director as advocate for well-trained coaches
    • The importance of the person responsible for the implementation of a coach training program
    • The learning styles of adults and the importance of using effective methodology
    • The differences between a coach-instructor and a coach-mentor
    • Advice on building good relationships with trainers

The topics of the second and third day

    • The importance of an elite youth development program within the member association
    • Responsibility for the development and adherence to a philosophy of elite youth promotion
    • Criteria for the recognition of talents
    • Meaning of regular, suitable competitions
    • Development paths for youth work and the role of elite youth coaches
    • The leadership of youth national teams

The next step for the Technical Directors is now to participate in the Workshop for Module 2A (Leadership and Management) next year. The pilot workshop for this module will take place from April 24th to 26th in Thailand.
